Chronology of D. Jorge Juan y Santacilia

1713

5 January, don Jorge Juan was born on the estate called "El Fondonet " in Novelda .

1716

Jorge Juan’s father, don Bernardo Juan, died and Jorge Juan entered the Jesuit School, after which he continued his studies in Saragossa.

1720

He received the Holy Orders of St. John of Jerusalen, later he became page to the Grand Master, don Antonio Manuel de Villena, and received the title of Commander of Aliaga in Aragón.

1729

He applied for the entry into the Royal Company of Marine Guards.

Principio

1730

He entered the Naval Academy.

1734

After completing his studies, he became part of the Franco-Spanish expedition to measure the Meridian together with don Antonio de Ulloa.

1735

He left Cadiz for Cartagena de Indias on board the ship El Conquistador.

1736-44

He stayed in Quito (Ecuador).
Principio

1748

Publication of Observaciones Astronómicas y Phísicas and of the Viaje a la América Meridional.

1749

He travelled to London on a secret mission to obtain information about methods of naval construction.
The Disertación Histórica y Geográfica sobre el Meridiano de Demarcación entre los Dominios de España y Portugal was published.

1750

He was appointed to the rank of Captain.

1752

His new plan of naval construction was introduced in Cartagena, Cadiz, El Ferrol and Havana.
He was appointed Director of the Academy of Marine Guards.
He founded the Astronomical Observatory in Cadiz
.

He was appointed to the Junta General de Comercio y Moneda.

1756

He founded the Asamblea Amistosa Literaria (Friendly Literary Assembly) in Cadiz.

1757

Compendio de Navegación para el uso de Caballeros Guardiamarinas was published.

1760

He was appointed Jefe de Escuadra.

1766

He was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of Morocco.

1770

He was appointed Director of the Royal Seminary of Nobles.

1771

Examen Marítimo was published, fourteen years after having been written.

1773

On 21 June he died at the age of 60 and was buried in the church of San Martín.
