CONDITIONS

The JORGE JUAN FOUNDATION has established the international "Jorge Juan" Award endowed with a million pesetas (US$5,835) on the subject: HISTORY OF SCIENCE IN THE IBERIAN PENINSULA AND LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES. A second prize of three hundred thousand pesetas (US$1,750) will be granted for the best Doctoral Thesis presented, as long as that thesis does is not awarded the first prize.

All original and unpublished research can be entered for the Award.

Works presented will bear an identifying title clearly visible on the front page and must not be signed or contain any direct reference to the identity of the author. A closed, sealed envelope with the title on the outside containing the complete, detailed and unmistakable identification of the author or authors should accompany the work. A Doctoral Thesis should be accompanied by an official academic certificate confirming that it was presented in the last two years, 1999 and 2000.

Works must be presented before 31 October, 2000.

The three copies of the work must be presented in Spanish and include an introduction containing a summary of the contents and a text sufficiently long to be published as a booklet with a number of pages of about 200 pages. The text will be presented on standard DIN A-4 paper with a space and a half between lines and in 12-point type. The upper and lower margin will be 2.54 cm. In addition, an digitalised copy will be included for print, even if there are illustrations in colour interspersed in the text.

The Award will be decided at the Jury’s discretion. The Jury will include a representative of the Foundation, who will act as the Secretary, and three personalities of recognised academic renown. The identity of the Jury members published at the same time as the Award is decided. The Award cannot be declared void unless the works are not in accordance with the conditions.

The unsuccessful works with identifying sign will be returned to their authors upon presentation of the delivery.

The Award-winning work may be published by the Foundation, if considered appropriate, and an agreement would be reached with the author on the characteristics and conditions of its publication: the Foundation will appear as sponsor of the study. The Foundation will also have the right to reprint the work as often as considered necessary. If the Foundation decides not to publish the Award-winning work, which it will announce in writing, it is also understood to have renounced its rights in favour of the author, on condition that any subsequent publication will clearly state that the study had been granted the Award of the Foundation.
